10 Netflix TV Shows YOU NEED To Watch this Summer!

Now that summer is in full swing for practically all of us. I thought I'd give my Netflix suggestions because shortly after school lets out the boredom sets in. Surprisingly enough I don't consider myself a major Netflix girl. I actually prefer watching movies on Amazon Prime or the occasional college vlog on YouTube. Nevertheless, I will say that this past year I've gotten more interested in its listings. Anyway, this list isn't ranked in any particular order and it doesn't include Grey's Anatomy (don't worry I do love the show just wanted to show something different).

1| Scandal

Don't even get me started, this show is everything! There aren't many TV shows that I can stay up till 2 in the morning for (and yes I understand that's a bad habit). Scratch that, there aren't many TV shows that I can rewatch after seeing them live on TV. Needless to say, this is the show to watch if you are interested in politics, romance, and well-planned drama. When I say that Shonda Rhimes is a genius at crafting twists and turns I mean she's a genius
Everything fits seamlessly together as if she already had season five in mind when season was airing on TV.
Since I refuse to spoil the events I just say keep your eyes peeled. Every detail counts for something, if not in that season, in a future one.

2 | Madam Secretary

Despite not being directly involved in politics, I'd say that Madam Secretary is probably the closest thing to "real" political drama wise. Not only is it the cleanest political drama on TV (you'd be surprised to find more than 5 curse words a whole season), but it is also easily the most evenkill TV show.
For those more interested in the nuances of working for a presidential administration than oval office romance, this is the show for you.
(Not to say that there isn't any romance, just that it isn't at the forefront of the show like Scandal.) Nonetheless, the acting is amazing and if you are watching the latest season live on TV you will agree that there are definitely couples that viewers want together, but like I said earlier this show is more real life so don't expect "insta-anything".

3 | Dynasty

Dynasty is a modernized reboot of an 80s soap opera, and as you may expect it oozes drama. If you love a TV show that will keep you on your toes from start to finish then this is the one for you. This show focuses on two of America's richest families, the Colbys and Carringtons. I like to think that it is a stylized fight between new money (represented by the Colbys) and old money (represented by the Carringtons). As you may imagine the show does focus on the less appealing parts of having wealth and really shines a light on what seems to be a "gilded age". In conclusion, if you like glitz, scandal, and a dash of lies then this is the show for you. I will admit though that this is one of the few TV shows I believe people either love or hate.

4| Dance Academy

I recently got back into this Australian TV show, and I will go ahead and warn you, it is about teens so if you aren't interested in teenage drama this may not be for you. I remember this show being amazing back when I was a tween and I was not surprised when I binged a solid 16 episodes last weekend because that's how good it is. This TV show follows one girl's journey towards becoming a Prima-ballerina at one of the nation's best dance academies. There is tons of love, drama, and dancing. If you are into a well-written teen drama (that is relatively clean content-wise) than this is the show for you!

5| On My Block

This show has quickly become one of my favorite Netflix productions simply because it displays the life of a teen in high school in a very authentic matter. this show accurately depicts the hard transition from middle to high school. "On my Block" follows four friends through their first year of high school and paints a picture of the triumph and pain they experience along the way. This show will have you laugh (and cry) as you watch these four friends confront the challenges in their predominately Hispanic and black neighborhoods in south LA.
Please don't let the fact that this show follows teenagers deter you though, for it definitely deals with a few major "adult" themes that I feel everyone can benefit from.
I also want to make sure you don't get the impression that this is a "deep" high school drama, while it has its moments the writers still manage to throw in plenty of comedy to make this topic a bit easier to swallow.

6 | Riverdale

I was hesitant to add this TV show to my list, because I didn't want to be seen as a bandwagon, but after watching season 2 and checking out Madelaine Petsch's youtube channel I couldn't help myself.
This show is the creepy small town thriller we didn't know we needed.
I will admit that I tend to scare easily which is why I don't like TV shows that could pass for horror films. That's why I am happy to say that this show makes the cut. This does not mean that it is not scary! But I don't find the scariness off-putting. Anyway, if you love a bit of romance, drama, and a dash of murder then this is definitely the show for you. (Plus let's not ignore the fact that this show features to hunks aka Cole Sprouse and KJ Apa.)

7 | Dear White People

I think anyone who knows me in real life knew that I would include this show on this list. In my opinion, this show is one of the most thought-provoking of our day. It truly shines a light on the racial issues that still plague our society in a brutally honest matter. (Meaning that those who are easily offended should probably pass on watching.) For those unfamiliar, Dear White People focuses on a different student at an "ivy-esque" school in each episode, despite the different perspectives all of these individual subplots help contribute to the main focus of the show. What I find unique about this show is that it purposefully doesn't shy away from controversial topics like police violence and interracial relationships. In fact, it embraces these topics so that the audience can truly understand the "black experience".
[I will issue a warning though that "Dear White People" earned a TV-MA rating, and while I don't remember nudity being an issue, foul language was prevalent.]

8 |That 70's Show

While most credit this show as giving Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis their start in the "acting world" I credit this show with giving viewers a chance to experience a different decade. Besides the catchy theme song, this TV show manages to remain timeless as a must watch comedy.
This American sitcom captures the essence of those last years as a teen and succeeds to capture practically every demographic for it truly has something for everyone.
If you're looking for a family-friendly TV show that's relatable and funny then this is the show for you. I will admit though that like many TV shows it is chock full of sexual innuendos that add to the funny factor for older audiences. However, I can promise you that despite that you will fall in love with one if not all of the characters of the show by the end of the first episode.

9 | The Night Shift

I think every "must watch on Netflix" list is incomplete without at least one medical drama, which is why I had to include this show on the list. I originally watched this TV show with my mom when it aired on cable and was quickly enamored with the depth of characters and plot. Sadly, this show was dropped by cable and brought to Netflix, so I only just watched the latest season, but I can still say that this show is worth the watch. The Night Shift follows a former Army medic, T.C. Callahan as he works to save lives while also running a hospital. I really love how the writers flesh out each of the characters. Nobody is just a sidepiece, everybody has a bigger story that is waiting to be unearthed by the audience.

10 | Arrow

My last suggestion, is Arrow. Like many of the other TV shows I have featured on this list, I originally watched it on TV, but after getting behind I restarted it on Netflix. Arrow is easily one of my favorite "superhero" TV shows because it isn't cliche. Oliver Queen is a flawed main character and while he tries to walk the straight and narrow he does make mistakes, which is something that I can relate to. I also love how the writers include all of the "secondary" characters into the main plot. Unlike other superhero shows the writers of Arrow fully fleshed out the characters and made sure that there were no loose ends. They also managed to make every fight scene exciting to the audience which is harder then you may think. That's why if you're the type of person who enjoys a blend of drama and violence I think you'd love the show, because it is seriously a well thought out drama.

If you have any other TV shows on Netflix that you suggest feel free to leave the in the comments. Thanks for reading!

xx,

  10. I tried watching Night Shift but couldn't get past the third episode. I think it's hard for me to really appreciate medical dramas since I work in the field :(
